I have a 01 Classic Karavan which houses a 16 " Blue Fin Spectrum. It's wiring is shot. Can someone tell me what is a reasonable price to have the trailer re-wired totally?

Don`t know about a price, but I would suggest you put on the new led lights. They will hold up a lot longer. They are more water proof, and they take a lot of vibration. The best thing I ever did. It costs more, but it is worth it. They will probably outlast the trailor.

Re: re-wiring a trailer

Does your trailer have brakes with the round 7 prong connector or does it just have the lights with the flat 4 connector?

First, if it is the flat 4 connector, I would really suggest rewiring the trailer yourself. It is very straight forward and running the wires isn't hard at all.

Second, if it is the 7 prong round connector, I'd still try it myself but research it quite a bit to ensure the brakes work properly.

Third, if you are having a shop do it, I would say no more than 2 hours labor maximum (realistically maybe an hour and a half). Also find out what the parts will run you there. I'm sure the mark up is incredible. You might save yourself a good chunk of $ supplying the parts yourself and just paying the shop for the labor.

Re: re-wiring a trailer

With a trailer that size I doubt it would have a 7-prong connector. I rewired a trailer that housed a 17' foot boat with a four prong connector. I would agree that its not a very difficult job and you can get the kits with everything you need. Another thing I would recommend is to go ahead and wire a ground to each light rather than grounding to the frame. I've found that most trailer light problems come from bad grounds...

Good luck.

Re: re-wiring a trailer

I just re-wired my boat trailer yesterday. Was meticulus is sanding to bare metal where I screwed the ground wire to the tongue. No lights at all. I have a plug in flat four tester that confirms all is right coming from the car. I'm not an electician but this is a straight forward job and I must assume my issue is ground related. Two questions- does the flat four tester confirm the ground on the vehicle is sufficient and if so, whats the procedure to ground all the lights as you subscribe? Thanks in advance.

I have found the best way to ground your lights is to ground each light seperately...Its real easy..Just make a jumper wire that goes from the mounting stud on the light and screw the other end to the frame of the trailer. The jumper wire should not be over 6 or 8 inches in length and solder the proper size terminal to each end.

get an LED light kit for $50, comes with the wiring and everything. like everyone else said, its pretty easy. I even took the opportunity to add a few fender marker lights when i did mine, came out great.

Your problem is probably the ground on the lights itself, You can either make your own jumper to go from the stud on the back of the light to the frame or sand the paint off around the hole that the stud goes through but that can lead to rust in the future.

I disagree. Make sure the metal where the nut that holds on the light is bare metal. Then either put a dab of grease around it or paint.

Run a jumper cable from the car to bare metal on the trailer. If the lights now work, you didn't do a good job of connecting your ground.
