First time post and thanks in advance for any advice that you may have too offer.

350 Mercruser Alpha I / Bravo I - year 2001. This has the freshwater enclosed cooling jacket. Here is what is happening. I want from a sustained cruse of about 1500 RPM to about 3000 and I noticed that my oil pressure dropped immediately, like you disconnected the power. I killed the motor immediately and checked the oil but it was up to the top. I noticed that the out drive oil reservoir was low so I added oil to top it off. I went back to ~1500- 1800RPM cruse and the pressure did not drop again. The next day I tried the higher RPMs again but everything seemed fine, until I went to idle. The pressure seemed to be quite low, about 1/8th so I gave it some throttle and to my surprise, the pressure dipped to negative and then quickly came back to the mid range. I am very confused as to what is going an and would appreciate any help.

Ayuh,... Which is it,..?? It Can't be Both...

I'd suspect either the Gauge, the Sender, or the Wiring is Bad...

Re: Oil Vacuum???

The gauges were new with the engine (2001) however, I have a suspicion that this might be the problem. I just can not understand what would make the gauge jump way below zero, it instantly pegs the gauge to a -1/4 if there is such a thing, when I go from an idle to about 2K RPM while in neutral. It just does not sound like any one of the three options that you gave. Do you have a theory as to how I could get a negative reading on the oil pressure gauge?

Thanks for the help. When I first saw this happening it was not as dramatic as it has progressed to. It has to be a short. Haven't found it yet but I am sure that your diagnosis is correct and thanks.
