I checked my bearing clearances. All were within specs.
Here are a few questions:
When checking crankshaft endplay at the thrust bearing, should one shove the crankshaft to one side so that there is zero gap on one side of the thrust bearing, then measure the endplay at the other side? Manual was a little unclear, so this is how I measured it. If this is correct, then my endplay is withing specs.
Does it matter how the endplay is distributed between the front side and the back side of the thrust bearing? Seems like the crank will float back and forth, so I guess it doesn't matter.
As far as I can tell with a .002 feeler gauge and my own eyes, the faces of the two halves of the thrust bearing appear to be flush. I did the pry forward/pry aft thing on the crankshaft per the manual. Anything else?
Do you guys put Loctite on the cranks and rod bearing bolts? Manual didn't say to, so I didn't, but I was just wondering.
Bondo, I saw a post on another forum by "Bondo" who said that Permatex #2 was a good substitute for Perfect Seal. Was that you? How about Permatex #3 Aviation Liquid Form-a-Gasket? Does this stuff remain sticky or will it eventually harden?
I know that sealing the rear main bearing is critical to avoid oil leaks. Any pointers other than what's in the manual?
I got out of the machine shop for $400. Turns out that "seven angle" valve job this head was supposed to have had recently was non-existent, so that had to be added to my total. My machinist said the seller was full of it. Typical.
