Raychart 620 or GPS?

We received with our Bluewater 45 boat a Raychart620 charting system w/ a Raystar 112 GPS.

IF they are operational and work would we be OK using rather then a Garmin GPS for use primarily on the Upper Mississippi?

We are new to the charting method and the more I read the more confused I become. I'm hoping honest conversation amongst savvy wayfarers will clear up all the confusion of what we should use.

It?s an antiquated system by today?s standards but if it works I don't see the immediate need to replace it.

The newer systems have a lot more bells and whistles, prettier screens, etc. but for someone just starting out I?d say use what you have for now. Figure out what functions you can and can't live without then go shopping for a new unit at a later date if you so desire.

@dingbat,

Thank you.

We need to replace the main power/source connection and too hope it works, at least till we find our way around nautical navigation.
