Instant Loss of Power 88 SPL while underway

I was underway buzzing along at 4800 rpm, 35 mph on my Montauk 17 Whaler when all of a sudden loss of power to 2300 rpm. Stalling and running rough, hard to re-start. Revs easy to 6000 from neutral. Under load to higher than 2300 at 14 mph. No smoke, temp good. The timing adjustment screw is all the way in, but when i advance timing manually by pulling the linkage ahead, rpms increase and idle smooths out. Did something electronic fail? Does my timing pick up (if any) need replacing? No adjstment I do looks like this will fix it. Advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

start with the basic trouble shooting, compression and spark test. could also be running hot. ethanol poisioning. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680
