Experts,

I bought a 9123r evinrude with some troubles. Most off the troubles are fixed already because two days later i bought an 9222 with an stuck engine for spare parts.

I've already fixed the carberateur, the propeller, fuel pomp and a few little things. Yesterday i've tested teh engine (9123) and it run but not very nice. The main problem is that is losing gears at 20%power and up. I figured that the gears are worn aout so i'll change them for the gears from teh 9222. I'v already disconnect the tailpart (everything on this picture http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/Evinrude/1972/9222M 1972/GEARCASE/parts.html) from the 9222 and tonight i will do the same with the 9123. The only thing i don't understand is ho to make the connection for the shift shaft (no 45 on the drawing) because when i assemble the gearcase to the rest of the enige i can't secure no 52 because it's inside the housing. So i wonder maybe i'm not assembling in the right order?

I hope you see my problem and have a solution. I'm dutch so pardon my english

Greetings

Re: 9222m and 9123r

#52 is the clamping collar on the shift rod.
To secure:
Secure clamp to upper rod
Pull the upper rod position Down all the way.
Pull the lower rod Up(rotate prop if needed) until in gear.
Easiest way to assemble is with assembly laying on its side.(front down)
Slide halves almost together and align lower rod into clamp working through the narrow gap.
Carefully start and secure lower clamp screw.

Make sure lower rod is all the way in place so the screw slips easily past the groove in the lower.
Any bind can damage the screw and/or clamp.

Because i'm dutch my english isn't very good so i will write wat i think you are saying
Secure clamp to upper rod ==> bolt no 52 to the shaft wich is coming form the engine

Pull the upper rod position Down all the way. ==> Turn the motor in reverse so the shaft which is coming from th enige is as far down as possible.

Pull the lower rod Up(rotate prop if needed) until in gear.==> Put the shaft which goes in to the gearcase as far up as possible. (which means it is in to gear

Easiest way to assemble is with assembly laying on its side.(front down)==> clear i understand

Slide halves almost together and align lower rod into clamp working through the narrow gap.==> put the tail off the motor back together and because the upper shatf is as far down as possible and the bottom shaft is as far up as possible there is a small gap th work through.

Carefully start and secure lower clamp screw.==> make sure you tighten the screw in the groove and not above the groove.

Any bind????? can damage the screw and/or clamp. ==> don't know what that means...

thanks already

Re: 9222m and 9123r

Yes you understand.

Bind issue - the shift rods have a narrow area which is where the screw passes through. make sure it is centered with the screw hole before installing the clamp screw. carefully start the screw into its threads with light hand pressure only until you know it is threading in and not cross threading. Only once it is threading properly should you attempt to tighten with a socket wrench.
