Hey
I believe I am having an electric issue....My boat won't turn over when cranking the key. I checked the power on the starter with a volt ohm meter and it?s got juice, I do not know much else to check then that. Can anyone please give me some pointers on what to do next?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: electirc starting problems

Identify your boat and your engine, Dan. Post your trouble in the correct troubles forum for your engine, giving details of what happens and what doesn't happen.

The more precise your language in describing the trouble and the more relevant the details the better your chances of getting quick, accurate advice.

What is the voltage seen when attempting to start? - Just 'having juice' is one thing - does it have 'enough juice' is the next question. The voltage SHOULD dip when you attempt to start the engine.... so what is the 'normal' voltage seen and what is the voltage seen when attempting to start?

I guess your engine must use a solenoid too? Does that work?

Re: electirc starting problems

Back in June I experience the same problem with intermittent starting on my 2001 Yamaha 2 stroke 115 outboard. I fished all day and got back to the ramp, backed the truck down then when I went to start it, nothing. I checked the electrical system with an ohms meter with read 12.8V. Loaded the boat and up at the parking lot, I tried the starter again and it worked . Brought the boat to the shop where the mechanic said that he tried the starter about 30 times and each time it started. Short of changing out the solenoid or starter, he said that I should just use it. He showed me how to use a jump wire from the starter to the starter in case it wouldn't start.
Well two days ago, it wouldn't start. I tried to jump it but got nothing except sparks. I got the boat loaded and at the parking lot, I tried again and it started . I'll order a solenoid, change it out and hopefully it'll cure it.

^ or.... they MAY be a problem with the wiring from the ignition switch to the soleniod ... ??? Hence the solenoid won't work and you won't get the engine to start.

I would normally agree but by jumping the starter, you by-pass the ignition switch so at a minimum, the motor should turn over
