Mercruiser Gear Set

Long story short. bought a 1993 crownline, Mag 350 w/ alpha one stern drive. Second time on the water we lost power in the middle of the lake. Engin was running but boat stopped. After getting towed in, had marina mechanic take a look and he said no oil in the upper unit and gears are shot. Said i need a new stern drive. As you all know that is $3000.00. Called the dealer that brokered the boat, and he said bring it in. i did. he said all i need is the gear set, which he has in stock which he will give me no charge but charge me some labor. It will change the ratio so i need a different prop, the whole thing will cost leess than $400.00 which is good but is it a good idea

That is all a line of BS. If there was no oil in the upper and the gears are shot, you can bet all the bearings are dead also. and you need to keep the same gear ratio, don't let them change it. Sounds to me like he's trying to get rid of some gear sets for a V6 he can's sell. You will loose in the long run.
And don't expect the upper to be the only thing with problems. The upper and lower share the same oil, and there may be problems with the lower as well. IF not checked, you could end up loosing the lower next and another upper because of cantanimantion from the lower.

Sounds like the "broker" is trying to get off easy and cheap. They possibly sold you a boat with a drive problem at the worst and at least a drive that should have been serviced properly but wasn't.

You can maybe take some of the blame for that too if you did not check the drive lubricant level at some point before using it.

I would ask the "dealer' for some cash for drive replacement and get a new SEI drive.

It won't cost $3000 for a new one and you can get the right ratio too.

Ayuh,... The Broker is about to Screw you 1 more time.....

As noted by Don,... A Brand New SEI drive is only $1400.Bucks,+ comes with a 3 year warranty...

I'd suggest to the Broker,... It'll be His cheapest way out of a Serious misjudgement......
