So, did the rope break, or is it ready to break? If it broke, you can bet that the backlash wrecked the recoil spring and you will have to take it apart and deal with the spring. However, if it didn't break, it is an easy job to replace the cord. You will see a 1/8" hole in the rope pulley. Find something that will fit in that hole, such as a nail. Now pull the rope all the way out and hold it there while you stick the nail in the hole. The nail holds it from rewinding. Now it is an easy matter to replace the rope. Note that there is a pin through the pulley that the first coil of the rope goes behind.

Yes, in spite of what they would have you believe, you can get the rope at the hardware store. Take the old one with you and get the same type of construction and diameter. Don't settle for the chintzy stuff, get the good stuff.

If the housing isn't broken, and it's the spring that's sprung, go to your local marina and order a new one for about $12. They're easy to install, after the first swearing fit subsides.. haha. Seriously, if you search this forum, I'm sure you'll find a detailed procedure. All Johnnyrudes w/above flywheel recoil will have similar spring setups, and similar winding procedures. Wear safety glasses the first time..
