Used/New Boat Ideas

I am new to the forum and new to the boat market. I am looking to purchase a used (2006 or newer) or new boat in the near future. I am leaning toward a Center Console style boat, 18-20 feet long, used for some fishing/cruising/family. I was originally set on a Key West CC, but because of mixed reviews I wanted to get some suggestions from the forum. My price max is $40K.

Thank you for your help.

I would highly recommend used, especially if it still comes with some kind of warranty. NOTHING depreciates like a boat. Let someone else take the hit.

With that price range things are wide open to you for an 18-20' boat....I personally like the dual console rather than a center console if you are planning a mixed use (fishing, cruising , water sports) . If I had my choice I would buy a Hydra-Sport 20' dual console.

You dont see alot of 2-3 year olds for sale but for 40K I think you could even swing a new one. for that kind of money you could even get close to their 22' Vector series which are REALLY SWEET!

What got you here? I don't think you'll like a CC for the last 2 of the 3 things on your comment.

You have a dock/slip, you towing? If so, what with? How many people? Where do you boat?

Your budget opens up a LOT of possibilities. Trying to understand why we are looking at CC only. I agree the DC may be a much better fit, as far as boat and size. We need a little more info.

I think KurtG is right. If you will spend most of your boating time fishing, the center console will suit best. If you spend most of your time with family doing water sports like tubing and skiing, side console boats usually offer more seating and comfort. If you will spend most of your time cruising, look for an older boat with a head and a hardtop.

Let us know what you get. Good luck!

Re: Used/New Boat Ideas

I use my CC for cruising and tubing as well as fishing. Also have a dual console Key west which to me is a good compromise from a CC. Bow riders are too cramped for me.
The Sea Hunt Ultra is a line of CC that added upholstered seating so it's good for both. They also have a DC--my next door neighbor just got one and they use it for all purposes just fine.
For a CC for cruising, look at the seat design. For example, a Parker (great boat) has none. A Sea Hunt has great seating in the front; remove the cushions and go fishing! Carolina Skiff makes them both ways: open and seated.
Don't let a dealer hear you say you want to spend $40 on a new 18. He will be keeping the change! Better to walk around a marina as well as a boat store and compare styles and size in person before shopping online, then start shopping, and keep the $40K in your sock.
I would not buy new. And if you do, keep some money back for rigging; used boats usually come with stuff.
No need to buy a new trailer unless you are going to do a lot of serious towing.
Bigger is not always better. depends on your waters and intended use. Also there is a huge swing in price between top brands like Whalers and second tier like anything with "Sea" in the name. But either can suit your purposes.
In sum, start with your intended primary use, accomodate your secondary use, look at real boats, then look at pricing.
