Johnson Model CD24 high speed needle

I have a CD24 (1967) that has a 7/16" hex bolt where the high speed needle should be (according to the manual). There's no packing nut, no needle, and no way to get to it unless you're double jointed, short of taking the carb off.
Has anybody else run into this? Did certain models of the CD24 come without highspeed needles? The engine starts, idles, and revs up just so far, then you can crank the throttle around as far as you want, but you get no higher RPM, and she smokes ALOT, even for a 2-stroke. Any ideas? I'm fairly new to outboards, so don't dog me too bad. Thanks guys.

It sounds like you are describing the plug for the high speed jet, the jet is fixed, no adjustment. The engine has a throttle stop so you can't over rev in neutral.

thanks a ton, pal. I'll put it in forward and see how she goes. Would you happen to know about the high speed nozzle. When I re-asembled the carb, I ran the nozzle in as far as it would go and stopped. No brute force applied, just stopped when I ran out of threads. Is that the proper setting, or do I need to back it out x number of turns from "bottomed out"? Man, this outboard stuff is fun!

The main nozzle and high speed orifice plugs are both to be screwed all the way in. DO NOT!!!!run it faster than start position in neutral. Unless you want to be picking up the pieces that didn't imbed themselves in your belly.

Yes that is correct, bottom the jet into the bore.
