Drive clunk

Doesn't happen all the time but every now and then I hear and feel a good clunk in the drive after I shift into forward. The drive engages, prop is spinning and about 3-4 seconds after that...clunk. Very unnerving.

Edited to add: I think it happens after I've gone form R to F.

Any ideas?

Re: Drive clunk

Check the hydraulics on your trim system. If you have a slight leak, running in reverse the drive can actually lift itself, when you shift back to forward, the rams compress until they "bottom out" - THUMP!

Use the trim button to raise the drive a little, put it in forward - if it thumps, shut the engine off, and look at the drive, is it now in the full down position?

Rams are a little harder to view on the cobras, you might have to get wet.

That would make sense. I've noticed it backing and changing gears around the docks and when I've backed away from beaching.

If I get what you're saying...when I reversed the drive lifted a bit. Go forward and it clunks back into place. I know that's not normal. Does it mean my trim system needs work?

After you verify that this is what is happening, yes you will need to find exactly where your "leak" is. Most likely you will just need new seals in the rams.

Since you have an OMC, you need to verify that your shift linkage is in adjustment. That clunk could easily be the clutch dog slipping one notch. If that is what it is, you need to do this as soon as possible as to not wipe out your clutch dogs.
