in the instruction its stated to set the spark tester gap at 7/16"

since i've not used one of those yet, I'm guessing that in addition to the timing light picking up the voltage flow for a trigger, it also would expose a low voltage situation?

two birds with 1 stone, i like it.
so we really have 2 tests going on here right?

However, as far as timing the motor goes, i could just as well use a grounded sparkplug couldnt I?

Re: Regarding J Reeves Engine Timing

moving onward...heres 2 pics of the process so far.
i think i've got the advance arm pinned correctly.
plugs are out.
#1 sparkplug is firing. (starboard top cylinder, 88SPL) (see pic)

book timing says 28 degrees. (so my target is 24)

what alarms me is that it appears i'm getting 32 degrees while cranking motor over.

I just get the feeling i'm doing something wrong cause I had the boat out last night, and although idle characteristics were not so good...WOT got me to 5300 rpm once trimmed out.

It would be difficult for an engine to run like that and yet have the timing so far off ?????

you may have "quick start" on your engine. It must be disabled to do the test...

Hi MAW31:
I,m doing the same thing on my 1989 90hp evinrude. With the timer base pulled back and the timer advance rod off, how would you be able set the timing advance to 24 degrees are am I missing something? That is the timing advance rod you have unhooked I believe?

Your spot on lee.

My mistake was taking the timing advance arm off.

I got stuck on the words "Pin it to the bumper stop" (or close to that)

The problem was that i was only thinking as far as the next instruction and not the whole picture.

once i reconnected the timing arm, set the binacle "all-ahead full", i could then set the advance using the adjusting screw on the arm. doh.

although it seems ez now, not looking at the whole picture was my error.

cheers
