Dirt in carb?

My OMC 305 has quadrajet carb which keeps having float issues. It is rebuilt this month with a new float. My mechanic says it keeps getting dirty. I checked the fuel lines and in-line filter. They both have a good deal of fine rust-like powder. The 2 18gallon tanks are metal......Is there anyway around replacing these tanks? (ie changing fuel filters more often or cleaning the tank somehow).

Thanks in advance. Just trying to save a few dollars.

The rust could be coming from your tank or the gas station's tank. Gotta get all of it out of your tank or it will continue to plague you.

Thanks for the advice. Any suggestions for cleaning the tank? Very old tanks. There doesn't seem to be any type of drain on the tank.

I don't see how you can really clean them in place. How hard are they to remove?

haha, can't remove mine either (fiberglassed)
they all have float openings, use that, water and detergent (tilt the boat slightly), suck it up with the hose, whatever left use hand pump and (I...) drop the microfiber cloth inside (on a stick) to collect last droplets (lint-free...) that's about it

Re: Dirt in carb?

If you can't clean those tanks good,go to NAPA and ask for an industrial style spin on fuel filter bracket and two filters. These are made to filter diesel and will work quite fine w/ gas. We had the same problem w/ an old farm truck w/ rusty tanks. Installed this and still hadn't had to change the first filter when I left two yrs later. Oh, and keep that 2nd filter aboard in a ziplock bag inside it's original box. Better to have it and not need it, and you know the rest.
