Merc Cruiser Tilt/trim

1990 rinker with a merc cruiser. When I try to activate the tilt/trim all I hear is a 'click' no other response. Any help on what to check would be appreciated

Bad trim selonoid.Jump a wire between the heavy red wire to the heavy blue wire that goes to the pump and the drive should raise. Between the red and green the drive should go down.If that works then it's the solenoid unless there's a bad connection on one of the wires.

it clicks on both up and down. could it possibly be a bad ground? also what gauge wire would you suggest to jump. thanks for your help

You can just use a screwdriver to jump the solenoids. Solenoid with blue wire is up,solenoid with green wire is down.Jump from large red terminals to blue for up or green for down.If it don't work be sure you have 12 volts at the large red wires.If you do have 12 volts and it doesn't work jumping to the blue or green then you have a problem in the motor. Also be sure the black wire coming out of the motor is grounded.
