Re: johnson 85
I just recently bought a hourston glass craft 15 runabout with a johnson 85 on it.
I know it is older but would like to know at least a little about the engine if it has weakness's I should be aware of. the year would be awesome to know as well.
model is :85ESL69m and the serial number is c-4172.
I have yet to get in in the water but just would like a heads up of a routine I should get done by a mechanic before I take her out on the water.
Good that you posted the model number, its a 1969 electric shift in case you didn't know, its important when trying to order parts.

well, elec shift parts are hard to come by. But as long as you have it and it runs just run it til it drops. Could easily last for yrs.
I would start by ordering the factory service manual.

then re-do all the fuel plumbing, flush the fuel tank out. Change filter, install water seperator and new bulb.
Inspect the sparkplugs and do a compression test, write the numbers in the manual for reference. Install new plugs.
Remove prop, check for fishing line on shaft ( it will cut the oil seal if left) , regrease prop shaft and use new stainless cotter pin.
Drain lower gear oil and check for water (milkshake oil).
Use new seals on drain screws and fill w. the special oil the elec shift uses.
Install a new water pump unless you know it was done recently, every 2 yrs is safe.
Clean all engine grounds til shiny, remove battery cable from starter and clean those connections real good.
hook it up to a garden hose with muffs and fire it up.
Don't rev it up on a hose, you can damage it as there is no load.
If it runs decent try it in the water.
Make up a small tool box for onboard the boat.
