she wanted to learn how to operate so I took the passenger seat while idleing in gear, I instructed her to push and hold the red button on the shifter and pull back to neutal, but I guess it wasn't specific enough because she pulled all the way to reverse full throttle, happened so fast nothing I could do but bite my tongue, luckily it didn't seem to hurt anything but it's just not going to happen.

Unless outboard controls are totally different from I/O, all you have to do to go from forward engaged gear to neutral is to pull back on the throttle. Don't have to depress the red button to do this. It will go right in to neutral but won't go past neutral. To Get out of neutral or to go past neutral (fwd to rev, or rev to fwd) you have to depress the red button.

On my boat as well as every other boat I ever remember driving, pulling the throttle back from forward gear locks it into Netural. Is your boat different or perhaps were your instructions not the best way of teaching someone with no / limited knowledge?

The original OMC controls for my motor had that red lever on the throttle, you had to push it up to go from Neutral to forward/reverse, but ya modern controls don't have a safety which always baffled me with everyone looking to sue someone you would think that they would have 2 lock outs on it.

Sorry my man from the beautiful town of Kent, you gave your wife bad instructions. Not her fault. You shouldn't have had her depress the button at all. Just pulling back on the lever will take it out of gear, and it will stop in neutral. Only then do you depress the button, if you want to engage forward or reverse.
BTW, from idling in forward, and pulling it out of gear and going directly into reverse, is normal useage of an outdrive. If it were to break yours, again, not her fault. There would have been something else wrong. They should be able to do that ALL DAY LONG.

I'm still trying to figure how putting a drive in reverse at full throttle is going to hurt a drive.

Maybe if you hadn't of told her to push the button in, she's have pulled it back into neutral, and it would have stopped there, like it was designed to do. Why you told her to depress the button to get into neutral is puzzling.

Oh man you guys are right,! I have no idea why I told her to push in the button, just nervous I guess, totaly my fault. The way I told her, she went from forward momentum, slammed directly through neutral into reverse. I still can't fathom what possesed me to tell her that way, not depressing the button can't bang reverse, I knew that, just plain wasn't thinking straight, must have been from sitting in the passengers seat.

You're a noble man, admitting your mistake, kudos to you! Now go buy her some flowers :D

Well, you are a big man to admit it. I think know why you told her, cause you may actually do it yourself, but you never actually pull it into reverse. It's just a "feel" thing.
But again, as you described, that is normal operation for an outdrive. They are designed to go from forward to reverse, without the boat being stopped.
Now if you go from 45mph to full reverse as my dad did in his Bravo equipped boat, you can cause an issue or two. But for peace of mind, he didn't break the drive doing that, he just caused a spring loaded ball to come out of its detent, and had to remove the rear cover on the drive to put it back in place. 10 years and 700 hours later, I never had any trouble with the drive, since I bought the boat from him. :)

I had a feeling that was it. I have done it lots too. I just instinctively know not to pull the handle so hard that it goes into reverse. You wife doesn't have those instincts, yet! But keep working with her, okay?
