Gentlemen -

I own a 1972 6hp johnson. Starts on the first or second pull everytime (even after sitting over the winter) and purrs like none other.

Not long ago the engine started making a loud 'clicking' noise:

1. When shifting into forward gear, the motor will sometimes remain in neutral. If you shift back to neutral and then back to forward, the gear wil engage. However, once you accelerate it makes a loud clicking noise.

2. The 'cruise control' on the throttle arm is broken. If you take your hand off the throttle grip it will quickly decelerate and kill the motor.

Does anyone know what this is a symptom of? I don't know if it wil be a costly repair or not. Please give me your thoughts and advice. Your wisdom is greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,
Vic

Start by checking your gear oil and while you are at it replace it. Post back if you have water in the gearcase.

Lets see if I can help since I have been nursing an ill 6hp back to health.

First one is Hopefully simple. There is no cruise control. The handle has a fitted fiber ring inside the lower end pressing outward on the handle. This friction keeps the throttle from snapping back. look at the parts list #81 friction grip in the exhaust housing section. If that hasn't failed, the bushing down by the gear may be worn out.

The clicking noise isn't good. The clutch dog is slipping off forward gear. This needs to be addressed before using again. #44 shifter clutch dog in the gear case section.

You will need a seal kit tools - service manual and patients. Remove the clutch dog file the edges back square like the rear ones. Install it Backwards to place the worn side to reverse gear.Inspect the forward gear and dress if possible.

Always Snap into gear briskly and at Low idle.
Slow or high idle shifting chews up the clutch dog and gear faces.

Wow! Thank you so much for the detailed response. This clutch dog repair...it seems rather intricate and costly. What could I expect to pay for such a repair?

Again, your help is much appreciated!!!

Thank you,
Vic

That I honestly can't answer. I do all my own repairs and shop used parts the best I can.
