I have a 62 10hp johnson. It sat for awhile but I was able to start it after cleaning it up. It starts up and runs fine at full throttle. When I slow down and run it at low spead it keeps running but won't throttle up again. Sometimes after running like that awhile it sputters and opens up again. Anyone have any ideas

Re: starving carb

You need to start with basic checks, compression, spark and fuel delivery. Most likely if it has been sitting awhile you are going to need to overhaul the carb.

Re: starving carb

I will overhaul the carb. When I was cleaning it up I took out the high speed adjustment screw and found it pitted. I polished it up as best I could with emery cloth. Could this be a problem? I wanted to replace it but could'nt find one.

Re: starving carb

I would first pull the flywheel and make sure the coils don't have cracked casings (common on older Johnnyrudes). I'd pull the stator plate, replace the plug wires, and file the points until all pits are GONE and emery cloth 'em to a shine. Set each at .020 when point rub is at the crank keyway on the cam, and go from there. You will be positive on spark, and then go from there.. Dirty points can be difficult to diagnose, as they may work fine for awhile, and then be cranky as hell. Good luck!

Re: starving carb

I pulled the maneto plate and as you said the coils were cracked badly. I replaced the coils, points, and condensors. Took it out and it ran well. Two other questions though. The coils seemed to be scraping, is this normal? It seemed to loosen up a bit after starting, still a little tight though. Second I didn't change the wires because I didn't have any and it looked to be a pain. Is there an easy way? I will rebuld the carb over the winter. thanks for the help
