??bad starter?? need help

My boat has set all last year. About a month ago I got it going and ended up changing the coil, plugs, as well as the cap, rotor and pickup. We took her out last weekend and it spit an sputtered a bit but what concerned me was the odd noise it made when it was almost at top end as well as its slight hesitation. I'm not sure how to explain it. I tried to start it today on the muffs today before we went to the lake and it cranked over for just a second and then made a "clunk" sound and stopped cranking. I tried it a second time and it did the same exact thing. Battery terminals are clean but I charged it for about 3 hours at 10 amps prior to trying to start and it still would not raise / lower the motor. I in turn placed it on 2 amp for 6 hours and this is when it made the clunk sound. The boat is a 1994 Glastron SSV219 with a chevy 305 and an alpha one outdrive. Any thoughs? Any input is greatly appreciated!!

pull the spark plugs and check for water by trying to spin the motor.
If that fails check all the battery cable connections especially at the block.

All had been winterized and I've added sea foam and some fresh 93 octane fuel as well.

Could have loose starter bolt and got bendix gear stuck.

Would a rusty shaft and stuck bendix make noise at 3/4 or so throttle?

If it was mine I'd either jump it or try what I know is a good battery.

Re: ??bad starter?? need help

Not too many reasons not to turn over
engine damaged internally
hydro-lock
U joint blown apart
outdrive seized
Dont really care what was done last year ,pull the spark plugs to check for water
pull the drive and retest

Curious why you aren't listening to Bt Doctur. With the plugs out you can check for water. You can also see if the engine will turn over. Pulling the sterndrive will determine if the problem is with the engine or drive.

Re: ??bad starter?? need help

If water is present you won't be able to comrpess it, so the motor won't turn over. Removing the plugs will allow the water to escape (literally shoot out of the plug holes). If its been in there a while, you're in trouble.

Pulling the plugs removes the need to get compression on the cylinders, so the motor can spin easily. If it spins with the plugs removed and no water comes out, you might just have a bad electrical connection or tired starter.

If water does come out, take note of which cylinders it comes out of. If it comes out of all, it might have been sucked in the exhaust. If it is just one you might have a bad head gasket, or some other much bigger problem.

Turned out being a bad coil. Thanks for all your ideas. Thunderbolt ignition coils do not require resistors on ignition systems.

Please explain how a bad coil ws preventing it from turning over? What else did you do?

And regarding not needing a resistor...of course it doesn't. You have a Thunderbolt electronic ignition. Was there a resistor wire somewhere?

Batteries were also shot and would not accept or hold a charge.

Re: ??bad starter?? need help

dude, listen to these guys and pull the plugs. i hydro-locked my boat yesterday by post ignition dieseling and she sucked water up into the cylinders in like 5-10 seconds. same symptons. barely would turn over like it had a week battery or week starter. i think these guys saved my engine for me by telling me to pull the plugs. check this thread
