In a word - rot. Its a wood boat with "a hole in the bow". I can guarantee that there is major rot in that free boat. And its not like fixing a fiberglass boat when the deck and stringers are rotten you just dig them out and install new. With a wood boat, you have to know where to stop cutting. And fitting back the wood is difficult at best. Thats why rotting wood boats usually stay rotting.

Nice looking little runabout. The hull looks like it might be molded plywood which is tricky to make a proper repair to. That's right, repairing a wood boat is not like repairing a glass boat. It is different, I wouldn't say its harder, just a different skill set needed (and no itching with wood). Personally I'll take the woodwork any day. (The boat in my avitar is about 70 years old. How many 70 year old glass boats are around? :D )

I think old plank built/lapstrake wood boats are cool. A real skill to build and maintain. As a 7 or 8 year old kid, I remember my Grandfathers boat was wood with an inline 6 centrally mounted. Probably had a drive shaft with prop on end, not an i/o. It was probably from the 1940's.

The old plywood boats seem to be more disposable. Once the plywood gets soaked and rots, the layers separate and an entire section is shot. They don't have the heavy rib framing that allows the plank boats to have small sections replaced.

Was fiberglass even invented 70 years ago? How old IS that technology?
