Want new engine controls

I have posted in the past about my 1960 Gale Sovereign 60hp. My question today is; I have original, old, very sluggish control for the throttle and gear shifter. It appears to be the original controls (label says Bosun Gale MFG). I really like the idea of a sigle control for both funtions.

Is there a "universal" controls that will work or am I stuck replacing the cables and using my two handle control? I have searched the interent and catalogs such as west marine but it's really a challange to find old stuff.

Thanks to all of you and iboats!!!

to be honest, you are better off keeping original. new cables. be carefull not to break the cable ends, as you have to reuse them. these are the correct cables.

I agree, you are better off with dual lever controls. However, there are single lever ones that will work. But unless you convert the lower unit to the snap shift clutch dog, single lever controls are rough on it because you tend not to shift them as fast and/or run around without being completely in gear. Also, you need a working idle speed stop on the motor for consistant idle.

So, which control do you have, the one with round ball knobs? This kind works much better. Takes the same cables (different ends at the control).

Re: Want new engine controls

I knew I would get a response from you guys! Thanks so much.

I have the two handle control with round knobs. There is a very long "throw" on the gear shifter. I have messed with the adjustments and linkage and it still takes nearly the full length to engage fwd/rev.

I'm guessing cables are the best route to go. When I order them I'll need to measure from the control to the transom then to the motor, correct? How much extra is acceptable/required? My throttle cable would go all the way across the transom and then some! BTW, my shifter cable at the motor end piece is already broken, the last guy put a couple loops of aircraft wire wrapped on it (it's tight but not right). Can I still find ends for this or maybe a "universal" ball joint?

Thanks again, Scott

It is supposed to take the full throw to get full gearshift engagement. But if you are saying that full throw still doesn't produce full engagement, better check the motor for shift linkage looseness.

Parts are available from any Evinrude dealer. At least for the newer one that I pictured. It was made for many years. The motor ends are the same.

The worst thing you could do is buy cables that are too short. Make sure there is enough to steer hardover to hardover without binding, kinking or stretching. Or S-curving. Sometimes it is better to go past the motor and loop back to it in order to prevent S-curving.

Re: Want new engine controls

Thanks for the info.

I DO get full engagement in forward and reverse. Motor linkage shifts nearly effortlessly by hand and when the cables are attached it's very stiff. I guess if they are operating after 45+ years that's a good thing. I'm thinking I'll just replace the cables and leave well enough alone. Heck I'm over 50 and want to be left alone till warmed up and have had a coffee or two!

I'll let you know how I make out. I know there will be others waiting for our responses.

Over 50??? Shoot, I'm over 70. How much coffee reckon that requires? Hey some of the kids still can't keep up with us.
