Hello, I just bought a 1977 boat with a 1977 Johnson outboard and the seller said it was a four stroke or something like that. Do I mix 2 stroke oil or 4 stroke? Can someone tell me if a 1977 140hp are all the same? I could call him and possibly find out but he didn't sound to sure. Thanks.

It's a two stoke and the fuel/oil ratio is 50:1.

Use TC-W3 rated oil and 87 or 89 US octane gasoline. You will have less carbon buildup and plug fouling if you use a carbon treatment with the fuel and you should use a fuel stabilizer.

TC-W3 is certification for Two Cycle - Water cooled engine oil.

Modern two stroke oil is designed to mix easily and readily with the gasoline.

I would recommend that you use synthetic or synthetic blend TC-W3 oil for your engine. It is available at most outlets under many labels, just look for the TC-W3 NMMA rating on the container: http://www.nmma.org/certification/programs/oils/

Try Walmart, West Marine, etc. ... both have TCW-3 oil and many auto parts stores and marinas as well.

2 Stroke, 50 to 1 and TCW-3 rated 2 stroke oil. How much or how little you spend on the oil is a personal choice and has been beaten to death in many many threads if you care to do a search.

They're good motors, but, hey, it's 32 years old and you can't expect it will be totally trouble free.

just a note..if you ever forget to mix the oil in with your gas your engine will go BOOM. Always keep track with how many gallons of gas you put in your tank and add the appropriate amount of 2-Cycle oil. I think its like 2.6 OZs oil per gallon of gas. There are plenty of funnel and container type thingys out there to help with the measuring. Also someone mentioned a fuel stabilizer..this will help your carbs to not get gummed up..I prefer Sea Foam myself..walmart carries it.
Also if the motor has not been serviced recently you would probably want to take it to a qualified boat repair place and get them to change out the water pump impeller and change the oil in the foot.
Good Luck Sparkie

Well guys, I took the boat out fishing early Saturday morning then went back after a couple of hours and it ran great, only problem was starting battery died because of loose connections but had a backup. Thanks for all your advice and I sure I'll need more.

Watch lose connections ... it can get expensive (cook the voltage regulator/rectifier). If the battery has wing nuts, take them off and throw them as far as you can. Replace with SS nuts and washers and tighten with a socket wrench.

Always make sure it is pumping water out of the tell-tale port, when you start it up and periodically throughout the day. If it is pumping fine this year and you don't know how old the water pump impeller is, change it before next season.
