Hey all been lurking for a bit decided to join.

Picked up this little tub for $500... the hull is really solid and it came with the trailer and a strong running 35hp evinrude. Even though it would work as is, it does need some love...

Brother in it after we got it home

Started with taking the trolling motor off... was a nightmare cause the bolts were so badly rusted

then before we called it a night we took the deck off

I was planning to have it sandblasted but i just got a quote that said having someone else do it would cost about as much as the boat did... so i'll either do it my self or just sand it...

Re: 14 footer aluminum

got some more done on this yesterday. Got the steering wheel and steering cables taken out. got almost all of the wood out just need to cut some old rusted in bolts off of one and drill some screws on two others and that will be all of it... all the wireing is loose and is ready for the motor to be pulled tonight... so all in all it should be ready to be blasted on saturday i found a guy that can do it for a pretty good price...

pretty much the plan right now is to move all the controls onto a center console, put in new floors, remake the front fishing deck, and possibly add on an extra bench seat at the back

anywho just a quick update

Fun little project you have there. Any idea of what the make and model is?

That 35 should push you plenty fast.

By the way, you should make sure who ever is doing the sandblasting is really careful. Sand will pit the aluminum and could even buckle or bow it. Here's a good thread about removing paint from aluminum hulls.

I had mine soda blasted. It worked well, but was really expensive.

Keep posting pics as you progress.

I did mine with a palm sander and 220 then 320 open coat sand paper. I finished off with scotch brite and then polished it with a 7" polisher. My brother nic nammed it the DeLorean. Pretty but doesn't hold up. Just go semi-dull with the 320 and you'll cut your maintenance to nil.

That is a great looking boat! I wish my 14' had a center console. Keep us updated on the progress...there are quite a few folks restoring/redoing small aluminum boats on here. Congrats on the purchase!

Cheers,

I don't know about using beads. Seems that they might be a little hard on the aluminum. I've heard that blasting with walnut shell works pretty well, but I think that's even more expensive than soda.

If there's not too much paint to contend with and you're going to paint the whole thing anyway, I would consider just stripping/sanding it.

alright back to work

almost got it all stripped out

there was a board over this flotation that was held with the wierdest and most annoying rivets i've ever seen... i had to notch the wood around the heads to cut the off with a dremel just to get the board off

and here we are all gutted and ready to be stripped ( i picked up some aircraft aluminum stripper at autozone)

well underway, i will strip the paint off the outside either this afternoon or tommorow... i need to find somewere i can buy marine grade ply-wood and some sealer... might go looking for some marine supply stores down by the river
