I am not sure if I need a new BELL Housing or not, I know I need to at least replace a bearing on the inner section (is there a name for the bearing?). I have the back stern drive off. Do I get to the bearing from that side?

Any thoughts would be great...

Re: Bell housing replacement

It's a Volvo bellhousing. Looks like from a inline 4 or 6 engine, probably a 270 or 280 outdrive.

First thing you have to do is take the bellhousing out of the boat.
Remove the upper gear box, and remove the 6 bolts holding the clamp ring on.
Then you pull the aft seal and access some snap rings. Remove them and you can remove the shaft and bearing/s.

Re: Bell housing replacement

Thanks Don (you guided me through removal of the stern drive, took it off this evening after work)...So I have to remove the bell housing to replace bearing(right)...I think I can do that...You may not be able to see it..but the bell housing is pitted on the inner portions. The lower half of the engine had taken on water (not inside as much as engine compartment)...either way I think (while I am this far into it) I shall seek a bell housing replacement...Do you agree>??????
:)
Thanks

Re: Bell housing replacement

I would be more concerned with the inside of the bellhousing around the bearing and shaft than anything. IF the bearing spun inside the bellhousing, then the housing is toast. If it didn't and a new bearing fits tight I wouldn't be afraid to run it. But I am just looking at a picture. You have the real thing.
