Some advice on a "new to me" Merc.

Hi Guys, I've had 3 outboards, but they have all been 50's Johnnys and Rudes. Today I picked up a 1970 Mecury 400 40hp with controls and a tank for $400 for a '63 Starcraft Comet project I'll have going next spring. I started it up, idled great, shifted great, and pumped water nicely. It's got the original paint and decals and looks really good for 40 years old. Had him throw the compression tester on it and it had exactly 160psi in both cylinders. First, did I get a good deal or did I over pay a little? Also, does anyone have any advice or comments on this motor or is there anything I should know about it? I'm sure a few of you guys out there have had this motor, so I'm just looking to get as much info as possible on this baby. Thanks guys.

Hi,

I'd say that you got a good deal. Even 10 HP kickers go for that much if they're in good shape.

Of course; the real evaluation of the deal comes after you're run it for a season or two...
