Long story short, I got burned, but not too bad. Got a '74 Glastron V-212 Sierra with a 270 outdrive and a Glastron marinized Ford 302 for an old alum. rowboat. Put some cash in her interior and shined her up. New starter, seawater pump, rebuilt tilt motor, some wire and relays. No problem. Now, started her up and started steamin'. Missing a freeze plug on starboard side and another one swelled out alittle. Bought a temp. plug and started her up. No steam. Problem or not? Another thing now she won't start. Cranks fine no fire. Now I come to find it has an electric fuel pump hot wired to ignition on. Even I know that's not good. Anyway, should I go back to the original mechanical pump on motor or get another electric pump wired right? Also, I found a freshwater 302 Mercruiser motor with low hours on ebay for $400. Question is, can I swap parts from both motors to make work? Even if just for the block and internals? I know this is alot but please help guys, you've never let me down!

personally i prefer the mechanical fuel pump over an elect any day and the engine parts should work if its the same vintage i would ask about the 2 engines to see if they are stock or rebuild and needing different size pistons, rings and bearings? and I'm sure there is more too these are just off the top of my head.

If I pull the old motor and just swap parts so I can bolt the newer one to my drive, will that work?

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

The Merc motor may be the most practical. Provided that's not a ripoff as well.

You could use the merc alternator, starter, carb, fuel pump, etc. The wiring harness my need to be "reworked"

Then you'd also know what your working with when buying parts.

Exhaust manifolds are also an issue on those old fords. They are designed to work with the Y pipe in the boat. I highly doubt merc manifolds will fit, and we're not sure if you've got a volvo Y pipe or not. Anyway, just another variable.

I read some of your past threads and you've really got a project on your hands.

Like towroper said, if the vintage of the motors is way different, you could have issues. But, I don't think merc has used the Fords in a long time so chances are good they are similar vintages.

Good luck!!

The volvo 270 drive is the one thing i'm sure is authentic. The motor is a 1978 and it is warrented to run good. Can I make the manifolds work with a thru hull exhaust? What about bolting it up to my volvo drive? Her are pics.

and a Glastron marinized Ford 302

Ayuh,... Glastron has Never done their own motors,....
So,... Is this a Volvo, OMC, or What,..??
Can I make the manifolds work with a thru hull exhaust?

Nope...
What about bolting it up to my volvo drive?

Again,... Nope,... Not without swapping the Right parts off the take-out motor...

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

the only thing to do is use the manifolds off the old motor. The reason I brought it up before is that if the engine was not winterized properly, the manifolds may also be bamaged internally which could cause the new engine to fail.

Replacement manifolds may be hard to find, especially when we don't know what you've got now.

Can you post some good pics of the manifold and riser, maybe we can find some that match.

My point is, I'd hate to see you get the motor in and have your existing manigolds ruin the new engine, or have you stumped again trying to find manifolds for your new motor.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

If you had a Ford 302 in it a 302 will bolt up --- engine coupler, etc,. Now the Mercruiser 302 is rated 188-hp ---- they are good engines and last a long time if cared for --- I am on 34-years.

If I was in your spot I would ask the marine mechanics what would fit in there that has close to the same performance yet uses less fuel --- maybe a nice Volvo 4-cylinder would be nice if it would fit ---- this all depends on what you want to use the boat for.

I can pull tubes and skiers all day ---- but going to the fishing hole and back is costly in fuel and makes them fish pretty pricey per pound :D

Best of luck

Are you sure the current engine is finished? Sounds like you have some basic issues that could be flushed out to get her running.

I see folks referred to other threads, so maybe I missed something.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

The engine is a Ford 302. That i'm sure. The risers have glastron name cast into them. The valve covers are chrome with glastron graphics. The drive is a Volvo 270. The 270 emblem is on the mid shift cover. There is glastron cast on the transom mounting plate. If you need pics, I can take some fresh ones. Just let me know what you want to see. Thanks guys.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

When I plugged the freeze plug holes, it stopped leaking and steaming. Just now it won't start, I think, because of the fuel pump problem. I have heard so many answers about condition of the motor right now, I'm really confused. I want to get her running but not replace something if it can be fixed.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

Merc 228 is a Chevy 305. The problem with converting to the merc is that the hole in the transum for the volvo is bigger than the hole needed for the merc. You would have to rebuild the transum.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

Merc makes a transom bracket that adapts volvo to merc. Probably the cheapest way to go is get a volvo bell housing for the chevy if you decide to go that route.

I have a 888 in a '73 20' searay that has over 2200 hrs on it. It's a very durable engine.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

I would be overwhelmed if I could get what I got running. What's weird about the whole thing is when I plugged the freeze plug hole that's when it wouldn't stay running. I can pump the carb and it will run for a second or two then stop.

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out

Mine does not like to run cold --- usually takes three starts ----- 6-pumps, then 3 and three. FYI

Check the choke and make sure it is working --- electric can be a PITA if you have been working with the engine and the key is left on.

It starts that is a great sign :D

Re: Lords of the Sea: Help me out + motor pics

I would start by checking each plug to see if you have spark. Then check for good fuel pressure after the pump, before the carb. That will narrow down a lot. The freeze plug should have nothing to do with your problem. You could do a leakdown/compression test on the motor if you want to get a better idea on the engine's health.

Don't go converting something and spending a bunch of money before it's warranted. Nothing wrong with the 302/351's. They used them in I/O in the mid-70's and have been used in inboards since the early 90's.

Edit: Just for the record I would get rid of the electric fuel pump if able. Seems much more likely to have issue/failure.
