I have a mid-80s vintage 70 VRO which has been pretty low maintenance in the 6 years I have owned it. I change the lower unit lube and fog the engine every year before putting it away but have not done anything else.
This year I started to encounter some problems and have put a new set of plugs in but that is it. I think it may need a carb rebuild.
My question is this: if I took this motor to a reputable marine mechanic and asked for a 'tune-up' or 'regular maintenance', what should I get for that? I think a carb rebuild may be in order, and I am tempted to try that myself but I don't know what else should be done on a regular basis (a related question is how often should the carbs need rebuilding...I know this one was done just before I got it). I'm not sure I would want to mess with any of the ignition stuff.
