Gas Fumes

I have severe gas fumes that are building up in the ski locker of my Bayliner.

I am assuming this is not a good thing!

Has anyone else had this problem and if so is there a way to inspect the gas tank without cutting the floor out of the boat to access it.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Re: Gas Fumes

As a side not the carb, intake manifold, fuel supply, water pump and thermostat housing are off the engine.

Weird thing is the aren't any fumes in the engine comprtment, just the ski locker

Well you have a vent hose, a fill hose and a feed hose under there, take your pick. You shouldn't have to cut any flooring. Most of the time it is screwed down and the screw heads are buried/hidden in the carpet pile. Just feel around and find them.

Re: Gas Fumes

Thanks for the feedback. I am hoping you are correct that there are screws in there, however, the decking is all glassed in (as far as I know). If I pull the carpet is there a panel that can be unscrewed to access the tank?

I am hoping that the tank is solid, as it is a very heavy gauge plastic, the feeder hose and clamp look good but I can't see much outside of that. Ant other advise? Where is the vent hose on the tank?

I'm also guessing that fume build up is not normal, please confirm.

Re: Gas Fumes***Update***

Looks like I didn't poke a hole in the gas tank after all (phew)!

After spending, let's say, way too much time bending and contorting around the engine to pull the starter out, I realized something, The Fuel/water separator filter assmebly smelled an aweful lot like gasoline. It just so happens my head was pressed up against that area and man the fumes were pouring out.

As it turns out the filter itself is very rusty. So after removing the the entire assembly and plugging the hose the fumes dissipated almost immediately! I will keep an eye and make sure fumes don't build back up.

Don't get me going about the starter though! Good God! I don't I've ever cursed so much in my entire life.
