Homemade oil draining idea

I am getting close to winterizing my boat myself for the first time. My boats manual says to drain the oil with a pump through the dipstick, but I have this other idea...tell me if this sounds viable...

I have decent access to the bilge, and the oil pan's drain plug. It seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to put a catch pan under the oil pan - but drill a hole out of the bottom of one end of my catch pan, and attach a tube to the hole that runs out of the boats drain plug. So, the oil would drain out of the boat's oil pan, into my catch pan, then through a tube that goes out the boat's drain plug, and into a container or something for disposal. In my mind, it is a lot simpler than buying a pump, and pumping it out...plus, I would be more certain that I got all of the old oil out.

Has anyone done this? Anyone know if this will/won't work?

TIA

yer idea sounds fine to me. as for ease of doing the deed. i can't imagine anything being much easier than a oil extractor through the dipstick tube. that's what i use. oil extractor tube down the dipstick hole. suck it out. take oil extractor to oil recycling store and be done... no mess at all... no clean up at all.
i also know i got it all. i can hear and feel the extractor tube hit the bottom of the pan. when empty, tube hitting the pan makes the pan ring and ya know it's empty..

Your idea will work and a hose also works. I use one of these for all sorts of stuff. I think it was under a $100 on sale at carquest. When I do a waterpump on a car. I just stick the hose in the radiator and suck 90% of the coolant out. Also use it for bleeding brakes.

Good excuse to buy another tool. :)

Bubba Says : Shop vac, small tube and duct tape

I am old and it hurts to crawl around the bilge area trying to get the drain plug out ---- or if I get in a weird position I may not be able to get out of it :p

I like the tube down the dipstick ---- works fine. :)

This is what I used...and no, I'm not a promoter, just what I used when I had an I/O...

http://www.qwikvalve.com/home.php

I had a tube attached and sitting in the bilge...when its time to drain, I stick the tube through the drain plug hole, and down into the pan. Flip open the valve let it drain, close up the valve, plug the tube (so any residual oil doesn't drain into the bilge) and I'm done.

Watch the shop vac. If you have any gas in your oil it may blow up your shop vac. They usually cool the vacuum motor with the air that is being sucked in. I had a friend that used one to siphon gas and the ending wasnt good.

I usually suck some up through the dipstick. You're right, its hard/impossible to get it all, but once you've got most of it you can just use your catch pan to get the remainder. Can't imagine anything being easier than that.

Just buy a dip-stick pump. You'll use it for all sorts of things. One slip with the pan and you've got a big mess on your hands (and in the bilge, carpet, seats, etc.).

If nothing else.........you're "thinking out of the box."
That double trash bag gave me an idea. My oil drain plug on my OB is about 4 ft. above the ground. When you remove the plug it shoots out about 18" and then a 4 ft. trip to the ground. Can you say splatter? I'll try the double bag over the drain plug next time.

I like that idea. The first one. Cheap to make, effective, gets ALL the oil out. I like the Quikvalve unit also, but not at nearly $30. Trashbags laid flat works well too but doesn't do anything for the bilge drain. The tube idea sounds slick (no pun intended!) to me.
Nobody has said anything about changing the filter. You guys using the dipstick method, what are you doing with the filter?

Bubba Says : Don't change the filter unless it is leaking

I use Synthetic oil --- I change my oil every other filter change --- this could be 10-hrs or 100-hrs --- I do not keep track --- it is just by time --- every start of the season I change the filter and at the end of the season I change both.

I use good filters --- Purolator Pure 1 --- Nappa Gold --- Mobil 1.

"Purolator PureONE, Mobil 1 and NAPA Gold filters are all synthetic blend media."

I know if all my oil should leak out I will make it back in with no damage at 1000 rpm

This is just a theory as my other engine never wear out with synthetic oil --- mic'ed at 100,000 miles no measured wear --- now, I do not run WOT all day like most --- making waves and spilling my beer

Install one of these and when its time to change the oil, you thread the hose through drain plug and drain into a pan or use a pump and suck it through the end.

If you have a Volvo or OMC, the dipstick tube already goes to the drain plug of the pan on most motors and has the garden hose fitting at the top where you attach your pump. That is the easiest of all methods.

I like that hose --- I could install it and run that hose to a spot where I can reach it :)

Okay fellas, keep em coming --- You think they would have engineered a bacteria to keep that oil clean by now !

True.....

And if you got a newer Mercruiser, there's already a hose connected to the pan that you can snake out of the bilge drain and "gravity-drain" it.

On mine, I added a hose like this one
26163_M1.jpg

And use a pump like this one:
366982973.jpg

Then I do it from inside because I cannot get the hose thru my bilge drain. So I used a small adel clamp to hold the end of the hose up at the port riser so I can get to it without having to reach into the bilge.

The pump will drain the oil in about a min and a half, hot or cold.

I have a checkball in the drain that prevents water from coming in if I forget to put the drain plug back in!! (You guys would NEVER do that would you?)

I also use that pump to do the trans fluid on the tow vehicle.....

Cheers,
