1979 mariner inline 6 90 hp, has been ran (out of water, in driveway on muffs) idled to low, but while trying to get it to crank so i can idle it up, now it will not crank and run. i have not tuched carbs since last ran. firing great and compression is good. carbs are getting fuel but it seeems like engine isn't getting enough fuel to start. i can spray a fuel mix into spark plug holes, and it will hit and try to start but runs out of fuel, and yes primer buld gets hard as a rock, has been changed because old one busted. So I am thanking that the fuel pump is as old as the motor and causing it not to get proper fuel. any ideas or suggestions? thanks for your help.

If you are squeezing the fuel bulb until it is hard and the motor still won't start, it is not likely the fuel pump's fault. Squeezing the bulb will fill the carbs with enough fuel to get the motor started. The symtoms of a bad fuel pump are that the motor won't keep running without continued squeezing of the fuel bulb to replenish the fuel being used up by the running motor. If insufficent fuel is getting to the engine, suspect the carbs and not the fuel pump. That is my opinion anyway.

Disclaimer : I'm not a mechanic. But what I would do if your certain compression and spark is good, clean or rebuild carbs, perform link and sync,
make sure choke is working, make sure high speed idle is advancing timing
then give it a try. Also make sure the correct spark plugs are in and are not fouled. It's sometimes hard to tell, 2 of mine went out a couple weeks ago
after a( welch plug?) popped out of my top carb after hitting a large wake.
The top 2 plugs just looked a little more oily than the other two. Keep in mind
these older inline mercs seem to like attention, at least mine does.
good luck. 1 other thing if you haven't already replaced the wiring harnesses
and motors internal wiring that might be something you need to look into
as mine was almost completely rotten and brittle.

fixed fuel pump now olny sputters while stater is spinning, but not wanting to crank and run again.. did figure out why starter wasn't turning fast enough , had trash in housing, keeping if from turning at full speed.
