I really hate to bother with this question but I just bought my first used 4 stroke motor and its a Honda. I have looked inside and out but I can't seem to locate any model or serial numbers on it.

Naturally I'm curious as to how old it is so I can get a service manual on it too. I'm guessing maybe late 80's?

Re: Where are the model and serial numbers

The frame # will be on a riveted plate on the clamp bracket opisite the side shown but they can show up missing.Thats a little suspicious. There is an engine #stamped directly to the powerhead that can not be removed without grinding it off.If you look back at the front of the engine near the point that the upper shift mechanism operates you will see a a cast in rectangular flat spot on that casting. In that spot is the engine#is stamped.Judging by the paint and kill switch confguration, you are looking at a later 80s early 90s 8a engine and they changed very little in basic design to this day. Most manuals for that 8a will get you the info you need.

Re: Where are the model and serial numbers

Thanks hondon I found some numbers. BACE 1001080 197 cm. But too bad for me its got a serious problem as you can see.

That cast piece is separate from the head and I'm wondering what its called. Would it be a valve cover? I looked on Boats.net and its not listed in their parts selection. It also seem like the upper cylinder is not moving. I'll check the compression later....and yes I know thats something that usually is done before you buy a used motor.:(

I only paid $100 for it and might consider fixing it or maybe just try and sell it for a parts motor.

Re: Where are the model and serial numbers

Ok so valve cover was a pretty lame guess. I dug in and moved the ignition coil? out of the way and now my guess as to what that cast cover is would be crankshaft cover. I'm new to having a small 4 stroke but the I understand the basics and differences between 2 strokes.

I'm just trying to decide if I want to spring for a Seloc or Clymer manual and fix it. Then it would be easier for me to idenify the parts and speak the language bette.

Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

That nice little crack means a rod has let loose and tried to free itself. Not a good situation or anything that can be repaired.Sorry.

Do'nt be crying in your cereal just yet.You only paid 100$ for that engine and have components on it that are worth much more than that.Hell that propeller is worth 130.Gearcase is priceless to someone that needs it.Coil, cdi ,carb, tiller, etc, etc,ad, nauseum.Maybe it doe'snt feel like it now ,but you scored.
