I have purchased a boat with a 73 50 hp johnson. I took it out on the water yesterday pulled got it off the trailer and I couldnt get it running like it needed to. It would start in the water but wouldnt run long but if i pulled the motor out it would run good. Under a load it just wouldnt so i started trying to ajust the idle screws on the carburator, still no luck. Could someone tell me what i need to ajust the scews at do i run them in and turn them out 1/4 of a turn or what do both of the screws need to be the same? If someone could help me it would be greatly appreciated thanks alot.

When you say out of the water did you has muffs on it. Running an outboard without water will burn up the impeller pretty fast.

at this point, there's more we don't know about the motor than what we do.

You really need to do some basic maintenance and observation on the motor.

whats the compression on each cylinder?
is it getting spark to each cylinder?
are you using old gas?
carb(s) will need cleaned out at the very least.
timing set
etc.

i suggest you review the 'top secret file' thread:

since your having a hard time starting the engine in the water try starting it out of the water set the idle to a fast idle put the boat into the water start the engine than turn the idle down setting the idle should be done while the engine is in the water
