The Project: Chapter 2, I don't think this is supposed to look like that.

So, I'm finally pulling the stern drive out after much prying. Ker-splash and this is what I saw. Time for a new gimble bearing and bellows?? Since it had the heads and the intake manifold off water did get into the engine. I would say it's up to the cam shaft! I imagine it's possible it came though that way, regardless I know that I have that bearing and the two u-joints that were sitting in water, not good. It sat apart for three years, even worse. I think we should have a smiling face that is crying with a stream of money coming out of it's head and going into a boat. I believe it would get used a lot!

Yes to new bearing and bellows.... in fact, if it's been sitting that long with water in it, I'd recommend a complete tear-down... there's gonna be dirt and corrosion everyewhere.

I agree with erik, need to investigate further. Have you drained the outdrive fluid?

So the engine was left open and water was up to the cam? Was there any oil in it or all water, I would think the whole thing is toast but thats just me.

The long block was already planned for. The fluid on the dip stick of the outdrive looked fine and at the right level. I have not drained it yet so I can't say for sure. Time to dig deeper and see if I have more surprises. Thanks for the help.

Water did not get into that bellows from the engine. There may have been water in the boat up to the top of the drive at some point in history, it can get in that way thru a vent hole. If the bellows was intact then the only way water can get in there is from a leaky drive that is full of water instead of oil, or water was in the boat way up to the top of the drive.

I looked more closely at the bellows and found a 1/2 in tear. So I'm going with that as my source for water.

Yes, that makes more sense.

Don't forget to replace the U-Joints too.
