I have a 2004 T9.9 four stroke outboard with electric start, which it had never been used until this season. I use it on a 25 ft sailboat and its primarly use is to get us out of the mooring. It started like a charm for three months. We went on a five day trip down the Hudson and into the Long Island sound and had to use the motor for several hours on end, although not at full throttle. On the third day of our trip, the motor would not readily start when cold and stall at idle, and has done so since. I read on another post the suggestion to pull the throttle all the way up before starting the motor and it does seem to do the trick: the motor will readily start although it runs rough for a few minutes. What should I be doing to correct the problem? Thank you.

Sounds like it is time to clean the carb.

I just bought a new T9.9 last year and it has a manual choke on the left side, (front) of the motor. Definitely need it make an easy start. There is a mark for the start on the tiller, maybe you don't have a tiller since it is on a sail boat? Then you would need a little bit of throttle. Do you have a key start? if so the choke is probable built into the key???

as there are a whale of models for the F and T 9.9 motors, without a full model number everyone but me is guessing.
me I have 30 years experince with blow boaters and I can say two things.
your not folloowing the correct starting procedure and your fuel system from the tank to the carb is nasty.
sorry but 30 years have taught me blow boat motors suck and I really really try never to work on them.
most blow boaters I deal with have the mentality that the wind is free and everything else outta be.
but yes most likly old fuel residue in your tank coupled with the new fine fuel we have has bitten you.
sorry.
do some googling about marine E-10.

The motor is remote controlled from the cockpit. The electric start, with either remote or tiller control is on the cowling, there is no manual choke. It may be the carburator is fouled, thank you for the input.

I am not sure what the rant on sailboat operators is about, but I don't think any of them feel that anything about sailing is free, not with sails starting at 800 dollars and having to keep a sailboat either at a slip or at a mooring for the season since there is no practical way to trailer a sailboat, but I am sure some may think that any expense associated with a motor that does not get much use is a luxury that they may or may not afford.
Thank you for your input

Re: Hard starting T9.9 hp Yamaha

I'm brand new to iboats, is it bad form to jump on anothers thread with like problems?
I'm working on friends 2004 T 9.9, kicker on a sailboat, found sludge, rust, milk etc in gas tank. Drained and flushed, added in line filter, cleaned filter at fuel pump, pulled gas line at carb and cranked engine and it pumped gas well. Motor now starts fast and runs 1 second and dies. If I keep cranking nothing. If I wait one minute it starts well runs 1 second and dies. Ideas??
