The pee nozzle (tell-tale) is an indicator that the pump pumping water to the block. Does not mean that you can't have a problem IN the block that could cause overheating.

ahh hah. the word tell-tale answers my question. its just an indicator. Well at least I'll have a functioning one to look at now. That could've saved me some problems.

Ok well I got the block jb welded up and sanded flat and it turned out great!!!

I got my used head in the mail and the water jacket cover bolts are super seized so I wont be able to replace the thermostat. I am going to use it for now and for a later project I will drill and tap it.

My water pump impeller was fried and the housing was melted pretty bad so I have parts on the way for that.

I do a lot of shallow river running dragging my motor in the sand quite a bit.
Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?
What about those plastic water inlet screens. Can I get a finer grade mesh for them?

I'm not sure if it is the sand entering that fries the pump or if it is the lack of water flow from being suffocated under the sand. But I need to try to find a solution other than buying a new short shaft motor.

If you are running in shallow water a lot, have you considered a jet boat? As far as outboards go, about the toughest motor I've seen for shallow rivers is the new Yamahas. The abuse they can take is unbelievable.

If I bought a shorter motor I would be fine. But for now I just have to keep running mine.

I guess I will just keep an eye on my newly working tell tale to alert me of problems with the water pump.

Jet boats are cool but I have to have a super rugged aluminum boat because I hit rocks and logs all the time when fishing. And I heard sand is hard on the impeller.

The go devil motors are air cooled and shallow but they are all manual steering for john boats.

I think I will sell my boat next year and get a go devil 16' X 60" surface drive boat w/35 horse vanguard surface drive.

I'm not sure what makes the Yamahas so tough, but they have developed quite the reputation around the world.

Last year, we used a nearly new Yamaha 15 hp 2 stroke on a Zodiac for exploration work on a small, shallow river in northern Canada. We ran that Zodiac up and down miles of shallow rapids day after day, banging it off rocks large and small. Going up stream, stringy black seaweed often formed large balls around the leg and prop, stopping forward progress. But it never overheated or missed a beat.

By the time we finished the job, the leg and prop looked worse than any motor I've seen before. In spite of the battle scars, it still worked great! Whatever Yamaha does sure seems to work.

Referring to an outboard jet. Readily available and perfect for shallow rivers and bangin' into stuff.

Well I got the used head put on. JB welded block sanded flush, torqued to specs and replaced the water pump. Took the boat out ran the **** out of it all day and no problems. Man I got lucky!!!

Were would I find one of these at a reasonable price? I never see any around but im not really an expert so maybe Ive overlooked them. Can I convert my motor to a jet drive? I also read that the impellers are a common problem.

Oh and will it go in reverse?

Is there a way I can run the motor I have just get it more shallow somehow. It is way deeper than it needs to be. Can I convert it to a short shaft.

Or maybe cheaper and easier to just raise up the motor where it clamps to the boat. Is there any kind of jack plate or something that will lift almost a foot. Where can I buy one or how can I make it. Sorry for all the questions.

The impellers are a wear item and will need periodic service. Heavy use might have you changing the impeller once a year.

You don't have enough HP at the powerhead to effectively run a jet pump. You'll lose 25% of your powerhead HP at the pump.

Mercury and Yamaha do a pretty brisk jet business. OMC always had jet models available. Honda does it as a dealer installed option. Don't know about suzuki and Tohatsu.
