I was playing junior mechanic tonight and the coil spring for the pull chord rewind came out and now I am faced with the task of putting it back in. What is the easiest procedure for doing so? I know it can be done I just am wondering what the easiest way would be. BTW I did a quick cursory search in the how to sections and came up with nothing. Thanks in advance!

Most coil springs are basically the same. Take the spring and position the hooks in the springs in their proper slots. Then tighten the spring to almost full tension while holding firmly with one of the three hands it takes to do this. Finally feed your pull cord into the proper hole's and tie a knot to keep it from pulling out. Slowly release the tension and allow the spring to pull the rope back onto the reel. If you had the correct tension the handle of the rope will pull all the way up and not dangle down the front of the the engine.

I hope this makes sense but it's hard to explain. Go outside and look at your mower and you'll see what I'm talking about, if it isn't electric start.

Luck ya'll

I had the spring fly out of my '79 4 hp Johnson not long ago. After I got myself cooled down again, I put on a pair of old gloves and just rewound it. I just made the smallest circle I could with the inner spring and kept winding. As long as you don't let go, it's pretty easy. You can change the diameter of the spring's circle by pulling on the unwound end. Then jam it back into the plate before it unwinds. Took me about 5 minutes.

If you had the spring out because it popped out of the inner retainer, you might want to make sure you bend a nice U shape into the inside end first.

Best of luck

Man I am bad about my posts...... it is an '82 Evinrude 9.9 I keep forgetting that you guys are not mind readers....... I did the same thing one time on a pull cord for my mower and I never did get it back to good but it was a little different than this one.

Thanks again!

I am sure you will hear from me again next time I get in trouble.
