Can anyone tell me how to wire this thing up???

I have an evinrude 140hp (1982-84) I have a clymer manual and the previous engine owner showed me the correct wiring diagram, but unfortunately I cannot translate the diagram to the wiring on the engine. I have installed a number of electrical swiches etc in the console, but now I don't know what to do next, and I don't want to burn anything out. If anyone can help me I'd be very grateful.

Heres what I need to connect up:-

12V battery, 2 X Cigarette lighter style power out sockets, 1 X Horn with push button switch, tachometer, battery volt meter, engine temperature gauge and a:D deadman switch (which I haven't yet purchased because I have been told their are two types, one of which makes a circuit to stop engine, the other type breaks the circuit to stop engine)

I unfortunately do not know which one I need! LOL... I know, I'm useless.

You need the kill switch that makes contact when the lanyard is removed (shorts the ignition out). Instructions will come with it.

You ask "but anyone got any offers on the other elements of the question?"

I'm afraid that you'll need to go into detail in order to obtain a detailed answer. I have no idea what that means.

Re: Can anyone tell me how to wire this thing up???

I am after a laymans explanation on how to wire up this stuff, Joe.
12v battery, tachometer, voltmeter, temp gauge, pushbutton horn, igniton switch, 2 X 12v power outlets, evinrude 140hp outboard (1982-85) and a deadman switch. I am unable to read wiring diagrams, I was hoping for something like "the tacho wires got to the blue one on the engine, or" the red one from the motor goes to the..."

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

The following link is color coded for the standard OEM wiring from the ignition: http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/omc_pics/REMCONTBOX.jpg

The following link shows general and specific color coding for various applications: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ignitionSwitch.html

The temperature guage requires an additional variable resistance sender and wire; both come with the kit along with the instructions.

The tachometer signal comes from the terminal block through the gray wire in the main harness, the positive (purple) and negative (black) wires come from the ignition switch as shown in the first link.

The complete wiring diagrams are in the back of the factory service manuals.

The cigarette lighter and other accessories should not be wired through the engine harness, the wiring is not designed for accessory loads.

DO NOT wire accessories into the engine wiring harness. There should be an 8 or 10 gauge pair of wires (red and black) at the back of the boat that leads up front to a fuse panel. Your accessories get connected there. The ignition is not intended to power accessories, just the gauges. The electrical and trolling motor forum has a sticky at the very top of it titled "Generic Boat Wiring Diagram". Here is the link:

Re: Can anyone tell me how to wire this thing up???

Thankyou soooo much guys, these drawings and links will be a great help. I'll get myself a fusebox and kill switch next. I'm also gonna install a 3000gph pump to the sump in the back to reduce bailing in case of being breached by a big breaker. I was just reading about the ignition switch and it occurred to me that I may have got the wrong one. My motor is a 140hp made beteen 82&85 (V4), should I have got a keyswitch with the prime/choke function on it? Will it be difficult to start without this? Should I replace it with a four position one?

Many thanks again to you all.

You'll want key switch part #508180. Terminals on the back of it will be marked:

M (Raised term) - Magneto Powerpack
M (Reg term) - Magneto Ground
C (Choke)
A (Accessory) - Anything 12v would lead to when key is in ON or START
B (Battery) - 12v Source
S (Starter solenoid)

Choke functions when key is pressed in.

Re: Can anyone tell me how to wire this thing up???

Thanks Joe,

I have finally now gotten this almost figured out, with the help of these diagrams. The harness has been re-wired at some stage which caused me a lot of confusion, I took off all the black electrical tape and thankfully found the original colour coded wires beneath. The only one I am not sure about at the moment is the violet wire, I have "battery voltage in run or start at ignition switch" but I do not really understand what that means. What should I connect it to?
