Newbie just bought a '76 Nova - advice?

Hi everyone. I just picked up a 1976 Nova. It has a 235HP OMC 351W engine. I am brand new to this type of boat. All my previous experience was on 16 foot v-hull fishing type boats. I intend to clean it up a little, maybe make a few modifications or updates or add a few things, and use it as a samon fishing boat on Lake Michigan. I am wondering if anyone can give me any specs on it or help me find them or even get me a lead on where to find a manual. According to the Wellcraft website there aren't any dealers in my area, or I'd stop at one. I was hoping to get advice on a couple things.

1) Previous owner stated gas in tank is at least a year and a half old. He said it might be about half full (I'm not sure how big the tank is- I'm looking for specs as noted above) He said the gas was treated, but I don't know whether to trust it. Would it harm anything to run that gas? If so, how and where would I go about draining the gas tank?

2) If I wanted to change the oil, how difficult would that be? I have always changed oil in my vehicles, but never in a boat like this. I can't seem to see a drain plug. I found the filter easily enough. Can anyone speak from experience on how easy or difficult it would be and how I'd go about it? Or am I better off just taking it in to a marina somewhere and having them do it?

3) There is no rear water drain plug on the boat. Can anyone tell me if this would be easy to find? Do I need a specific plug or are there generic ones that will work. I can't tell if the threads in the hole are screw in threads or if it's just ribbing.

If anyone has any general knowledge, experience, tips, advice, how-to's, etc... I am all ears. Thanks so much for any advice or assistance you can provide.

Here's a link to the V-20 website that has old catalogues archived. Cant tell from you pic if you have the regular nova or what they call the "offshore Nova". one has a 60 gallon tank and the other has 100 gallon.

as far as the oil changing you have to find an omc maintenance manual...no tips on where to find one but they have a lot of manuals posted here on Iboats....do as good a search as you can and if no luck start a new thread in the repairs section under omc and see if anyone can steer you in the right direction.....

Not sure but I would guess that your drain hole in the back will take a standard brass 1/2" npt plug. if you want to be sure without wasting money go buy a 1/2" pvc or plain steel plug at home depot for less than a buck and if it fits go buy a brass one...(even the brass ones are only 3 or 4 dollars each)

Re: Newbie just bought a '76 Nova - advice?

Thanks for the info. Based on looking at the catalog (thanks for that link!) I have the Offshore model. I noticed on the catalog it says 128 gallon fuel capacity. I'm going to assume that would be if I had twin engines, because it also says max hp is 470. I have only one 235hp engine, so then would my fuel capacity be 64 gallons. Seem logical and/or correct? You were right about the water drain plug. I didn't even think about it, but after reading your post I remembered I already had a 1/2" pvc plug. I tried it and it fit perfectly. I'll check on the oil change stuff. Thanks so much again for your help!

you're welcome...is your boat the 21 or 25 footer....the 25 offshore has the 128 gallon tank but the 21 footer (a couple pages before the 25) has 100 gallon tank. from your pic I thought you had the 21 but I guess it could be bigger...

Nice boat by the way

I guess I failed to note that it was a Nova 250. So it really has a 128 gallon gas tank? Wow! Thanks again for the help.
