Common Cleaners Can Turn Into Poison Gas

"Yep, I thought I was a goner this time! How simple it was to get in trouble. After seeing and reading so many warning labels, we tend to no longer pay them any heed. We buy chemicals and sprays at a local parts house and think 'How can this be so bad, health-wise, if I'm buying it over the counter?' Here's how a small whiff of smoke almost dropped me where I stood."

That is a good article, and there are many more poisonous gases that can form with a wide range of chemicals.

Another one that dang near killed me is tig welding on a cleaned....chlorine storage tank. That also produces phosgene gas.

Be Safe

Any chlorinated hydrocarbon, including carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene, etc, when exposed to hot metal can decompose into phosgene.

Back in the wood stove days, they used to sell a fire extinguisher that was basically an inverted bottle of carbon tet with a woods metal plug sealing it. It was to be installed above the wood stove. Many people died before they outlawed them in the 50's.

There's still danger. The most common these days is an electric heating element failure in a vapor degreaser, usually caused by lack of maintenance.
