85hp force water in motor

I have a '89 85-hp motor. When I run a hose to it in my yard, it will run good and sounds great. When I put it in the lake it seems like there is water getting into the motor. Is it possible to get water into the motor that way? Is there a valve in the exhaust that keeps the water from getting in?

I am going thru something very similiar to what you're experiencing right now. First, make absolutely sure that you're using water free gas, 100% sure. If you're still having problem water on the plug then your head gasket and or exhaust cover gasket is leaking water into the motor diluting the gas= no combustion. Worst, your reed valves are fubar.

On a hose the water pump won't pump the volume that it will submerged in a tub/lake/ocean.

How is your engine running? What are the compression numbers? These are some of the things we need to know to help you.

A good sized hose should pump more than enough volume, what Mark is running into I believe is the drag of the prop having to turn to push the boat, and that takes power, setting there in neutral there's no load on the motor ,its sorta like trying to set your idle without being in the water tied to the dock, if there's water in the tank get it out, flush the system and post back to us what the fuel that came out looked like. Hope this helps . MOPARMAN

+1 on compression test. More available water to pump=more water past a bad gasket.

#'s are a little low but OK. Try a decarb. Being within 10# of each other is good. Indicates good gaskets. Only thing more I can suggest is run a known clean tank of fuel to verify the original source of fuel didn't have water in it.
