What's the function of the small oil tank under the engine cowling ? I this the primary feed of oil to the carbs or is this just a backup if the main outside oil tank goes dry ?
I'm not trying to repair this motor, just evaluating it along with the boat it's on to decide if I want to buy it. I've owned a lot of OMC's in the past but never a Yamaha, I know the Yamis have a great reputation. I was just trying to get a cursory understanding of why there are two tanks with this system. I'm not condemning it, just trying to understand which tank I'd be filling if I buy it ( neither owner or manual are available- broker is selling) .
the small tank on the engine is what actually feeds the oil to the engine. the reserve tank or external tank has a small pump in it that feeds oil to the main tank (small tank on the engine) as needed. there are sensors on the main tank that will tell the pump on the reserve tank to turn on and off. so to answer your question, you need both. they work together. that being said, if your reserve tank has a problem, you could limp your way home by stoping every so often and filling the main tank on the engine.
you should get an alarm if the main tank (the small one on the engine) gets to the "low" position. the alarm will sound and the engine RPM's should drop.
you could fill that tank manually. the tank, i believe is gravity fed but there is an injector pump also.
I can't give you a good estimate. to many factors. but I would estimate about an hour.
explanation sucked. to many technical inaccuacies.
however I will bow out as you dont wish to read up on how the system works and why each piece is there.
I have posted extensivly on precision blend and I am one of the few techs it doesnt bite.
Rodbolt , actually I did read up about the system ,thanks to your suggestion, and have a pretty good understanding of how it works now. But ,I do have some concern now that you tell me that you're one of the few techs who can successfuly repair them.
