How critical is an air silencer gasket?

I have an 88 88spl rudy. How critical is the gasket for the outer silencer plate? Now I'm talking about the plate I have to take off to see down the barrel of the carbs. If that makes any sense.

If it is critical do I need to replace it every time I take the cover off?

Mine doesnt have one at all.

You can reuse them as long as they are in one piece. If in pieces and can't get one, leave it out.
