How do I ID the engine and outdrive?

I know my engine is a 5.7 Volvo Penta (GM 350) but how do I determine what Volvo Penta calls it AQ200D, AQ220F etc.? The original valve covers have been replaced so the ID stickers are long gone. Also, I have a Volvo Penta sterndrive in which the rear cover has no ID on it. So how do I determine whether it's a 270, 280, 290 etc.? Thanks

Well, a model year, and/or some pics would make it pretty easy to tell.

Re: How do I ID the engine and outdrive?

If one could look at a picture and tell what it is, there should be some way to explain what to look for without a picture. The boat is a 1979 and so in 30 years who knows how many outdrives and motors have been in it. I was wondering if you can tell by engine or outdrive serial number and where to go to match it up? Is there a WEB site that can tell me? I'm not finding anything while serching.Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Well then, I'll go with an AQ260A. Those typically came with a 280 outdrive. The way to tell the outdrive, is if exhaust is flat and about an inch tall with no visable flapper, it's a 280, if the exhaust is more triangular with a rubber flapper at the opening then its a 270 outdrive.

Go to this link. In the "Engine Type" box type in,"aq260a" Hit enter.

Interesting. I have the same setup and same year as wadouglas. According to your description and viewing the website, mine must be a 280. Thanx...

Re: How do I ID the engine and outdrive?

Thanks for all the information. I went to the Volvo Penta website and saw where I was going wrong. I thought the designation 260, 270, 280, 290 was and indication of the size engine, i.e. 260 was a 4 cyl engine etc. Now I understand it's more related to the age of the outdrive. Thanks!

Sorry, but that has nothing to do with the engine number. Engines, like the AQ260, the 260 stands for the crankshaft HP of the engine. In this example, the engine is a 5.7L Chevy V8. An AQ200 was a 5.0L V8 Chevy.

Here is a Volvo service bulletin on how to ID your engine.

Here is a chart to help ID the outdrive.

I have the same year/engine as yours. On the original valve cover it's stickered 260A...

Re: How do I ID the engine and outdrive?

Thanks for the charts. I was refering to the outdrives with regards to age. According to the outdrive chart a 280 was the first duoprop, correct? The 290was when they went to the beefier transom shield, correct?
As far as the engine goes, I don't have a serial number to go on. The original valve covers are gone and I don't see a serial number anywhere. I'm sure it's the very early red engine. I also know it's a GM350. I assume it's a 260 hp. Am I close? I don't know specifically what makes it an A,B,C,D,E?
I really appriciate your help.

Re: How do I ID the engine and outdrive?

You either have an Aq260A or possibly an Aq255B. From what I can tell, they are the same. You'll never know...

The 255 preceeded the 260 which both came out in the late 70s. They where a 350 gm engine with a Qjet carb.

The 290 outdrive does have a different transom shield and was offered only with power trim.

Post some pictures of the engine, drive, and transom shield (outside shots). It's hard to say if your boat has been repowered or converted by a previous owner. No number, it's just all guessing by year. And it may be a newer engine and/or drive.

Re: How do I ID the engine and outdrive?

I just removed the engine. It may or may not be the original. I know for sure the engine I'll be putting in is a Chevy 350 with a marine cam. No big deal I guess, I'm just trying to educate myself on how the marine side identifies itself. I also just replaced the outdrive. I had a VP 280 single prop and the top gear box chewed it self up. I replaced it with a 290 duoprop. I had to switch the bracket out so it would fit the old transom shield. I can't beleive the difference in performance. I should have changed it out a year ago. Thanks!

That's a little easier to answer, should have said that to begin with. Here is a service bulletin that explains the "Hows" & "Whys" of the numbering system for Volvo Penta engines.

That is everyones reaction when they make the change over.
