That is a sa-weeeeet lil SC even if she's glass!

I agree (demand!) to hear the background story on how she came into your possesion, sitting on the corner with a for sale sign? Little old lady selling her husbands boat? Estate sell? Family member?

Re: Look what I bought today!

I paid $1400 for the whole thing - boat, motor, trailer and cover. It was on Grand Rapids Craigs List. It had been there for about a month for $1800 and I kept going back to the ad. Finally decided to take the 55 mile drive and check it out. I literally couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the condition of the boat. I went over the whole boat. Literally, there is not a scratch on the hull. Hull is shiny like new. No patches anywhere. The seat cushions are actually life preservers and have the original Coast Guard tags on them. I can't believe the upholstery can be original, as it seems the vinyl would be dry and cracked after 48 years. Is it possible someone recovered them and left the original tags on them? Upholstery was manufactured by a company in Goshen, Indiana, where Starcrafts are made. The seat platforms are plywood, and I looked underneath, and the plywood looks like perfect. The tops of the plywood have the matching "spatter" paint which is original on the floor, so they must be original, unless someone has redone the spatter paint. But I don't think so, as the floor of the boat shows typical foot wear. The guy I bought it from had only had it a short time, so history is unknown. I paid a little more than I normally would (I'm basically cheap!) but just couldn't pass up such a find. Since I'm a lifetime Johnnyrude owner, I've got a lot to learn about Mercs!:)

I don't doubt for 1 minute that it's all original, my 67 MFG has all it's original interior, vinyl is still soft although it does show some wear used as a fishing boat for the past 25yrs stored outside covered, so yeah I can see garage kept lightly used 40yr old craft looking that good.

Yup - it's sitting in the garage waiting for Spring:) Been going through the motor during the "off-season" - although she pumps water fine, i'm going to replace the impeller and she'll be ready to go.

Nice boat. But I'd sell the Merc and put a nice Johnson or Evinrude on it :)

I've considered putting a 40hp Johnnyrude on it. I'll wait to see how she runs out. I had it in the water twice in September when I bought it and she seemed to run well. But haven't had enough run time to know for sure. If she runs good I'll keep it. Motor really looks cool on the boat, but if she gives me any problems I'll switch her out for a Johnnyrude I can easily work on.

Yup, got the parts manual and service manual - the Merc 400 was basically the same as a Mark 58, so I've been able to find most parts. Replaced the timing belt and gas lines and rebuilt the fuel pump. Cleaned the filters. I just got my tool for removing the water pump cover so I can get to the impeller. So today, I'm planning on dropping the lower unit. Hope all goes well with that. Then, I'll wait until Spring, do a decarb and see how she runs before doing any more work on it.
