Need some paint questions answered...please

Ok So after we primered our boat we have been waiting and letting it cure. During that time we have been trying to decide what paint to use. The 3 paints we have been looking at is petite, interlux and dupont imron.

I have read multiple threads on here about paints, but I have a few specific questions that were not answered in those threads.

1. I hear imron is very toxic, I searched for an msds for this paint and every website either wants to charge you or the "document was not found". My question is how horrible is this stuff for you if you are rolling and tipping it on?

2. When you buy interlux or petit does it come in a kit with hardener and paint and reducer? Or are these all seperate?

3. Cheapest place to buy petit and interlux?

Im good for number two.

Interlux sells single pack and two part paint. Brightside is single part paint that comes in one can. Perfection is two part paint and comes in two cans. They are sold together. The top can is hardener, the bottom is paint.

I am curious as to how you picked a primer without deciding on the final coat first, but that's no big deal.

Any 2 part marine or automotive paint is considered toxic and if you read the warning labels you will wear the proper protective gear to primarily protect your lungs and oh yeah your brain. Spraying or rolling the fumes are going to get you if you aren't in a well, well, ventilated area. You can get all the information you need right off a can of paint in your local marine store, and I haven't looked but any manufacturer will have it on their web site. In my opinion it comes down to color choice and price as they are all good long lasting finishes.

Luck ya'll

well we picked this primer because the owner of the paint store said it will work with interlux, so we got it.

As I am currently going through the nightmare which is painting my boat.. get two part paint!

Granted, if you have many weeks to sit around waiting for it to dry, then single-part is fine. Seriously, go with two-part. I used Pettit one-part three weeks ago and it still is soft enough to push my nail into it and scratches (paint removing scratch) with just a scuff. On the flip side, I used a two-part clear coat earlier today and it is tough as nails already. I'll be sanding off the Pettit and going with a two-part for mine, even with the crazy labor required to remove a non-hardened coat.

My $.02 so you can save your $200

Yes sir, all the paints I have listed are 2 parts. I am very sorry for the troubles lowkee :( We had issues with our primer so I feel your pain, we got about 2 days worth of sanding ahead of us. It sucks thinking you have all your bases covered and you eff one small thing up haha.

Cheapest I have found interlux perfection for is gcm distributors. Anyone order from them before? http://www.gcmdistributor.com/product_detail.php?pid=497

If this is a good deal I will probably order it soon. How much should I order for a 17.5' tri-hull. Just painting the hull. I was going to go with 1 gallon? Only thing is if I have any left over I really have no where else to put black paint.

Was going to go with interlux brightside or just rustoleum for the cap, in white.

Thrillhouse, I doubt you will need a gallon of perfection to do your boat. You could probably do two boats with that much. I painted these hull sides with two quarts of perfection. 1 quart each coat.

Somewhere on the interlux website there is a calculator to figure how much you need. I cant find it but I remember using it. If your going with perfection two quarts is most likely enough paint. You might even need to mix portions of the paint and hardener rather than the whole quart to get a coat done on a 17 foot boat. Check it out before you over buy.

Re: Need some paint questions answered...please

THANKS!!!! This boat would probably be at the bottom of a lake somewhere if it weren't for the great people on iboats.

Only the Hull will be painted black, because the cap would get waaaay too hot.
The cap will be painted white, we already have white interior.

Ok last question. The calculators seem to point towards only painting whats above the water line. I'm under the impression since this is a trailer-ed boat I can paint the entire hull with perfection? Anyways it calls for 2quarts for a 20ft boat. For some reason i have my doubts that it will be enough since its a trihull and seems to have more surface area.

BTW I love seeing pics of your boat drewp. Your paint came out superb, I hope ours comes out well. Im nervous cuz of the primer debacle.

This is why I had someone do it for me. Too many different brands and procedures, and I suck at bodywork! :)

Clean

202 solvent wash and/or YMA601 - clean rags and tools only, gloves

Sand

120-220 grit

Clean

202 solvent wash- clean rags turned and replaced often

Repair

Interfill or Watertite epoxy filler- small repairs

Polyester resin and fillers for big repairs or when the surface is going to be gelcoated and color matched. *note- polyester products should not be used over epoxy products.*

Prime

Epoxy Primekote- two part epoxy primer

Sand

220-400 dry to wet- sand until primer is smooth and translucent. (this fills surface porosity and yields a baby smooth surface)

Paint

Interlux perfection- apply using thin nap or solvent resistant foam roller followed by lightly tipping the bubbles out of the paint using badger hair or china bristle brush. No wind, no dust, no excessive sunlight. (early a.m. is best time)

enjoy

Re: Need some paint questions answered...please

Thanks drewp!

As for that website would you guys say this is a normal thing to see when buying paint?

"PLEASE NOTE: Your package's shipping charges are not calculated on the web or included in your total.

Shipping charges can only be calculated once your items have been picked and packed."

They say hazmat charges will apply also. So essentially if I buy from them I am saying ok to any additional charges they want to throw in after the fact.

Any opinions?

Re: Need some paint questions answered...please

Just wanted to let you know I found those guys on Ebay. It looks like they charge 13 bucks and then 6 bucks for each additional item. If that is the case you may want to check some of the other places who look a bit higher but give better breaks on shipping. www.JamestownDistributors.com lets you total up with shipping prices so you can see just what it costs. Just a thought let me know how you make out!

Camlee the guy from gcm called me today, 2 quarts of interlux shipped for 107.58. Not too shabby from all the other places I was looking at. I will let you know when it arrives.
