Hi.
Im new here and also to the johnson/eivinrude engine, so Im hoping for some help here.
Iv gotten a cheap deal on a boat with engine that seems to be in good shape. But running it I get theese jerks in the boat, so i guess its the doog/gears, but wil check the prop to be sure.
But what im wondering about is what years of these engines can use the same gear house?
I think(not sure) that mine is an 1982 model. But can I then use all gear house from like 75-89? or whats the limit?
Iv got an offer for a used on from a dead 77 engine, thats almost new(new house on old engine), but not sure if it wil fit since its not identical by picture as mine is.
Hope for some help.

The early lower units with the water intake up front will not work on the newer ones with the water intake on the sides. You wouldn't want to do it if it would work. Those early ones were awful, having burned up many a powerhead before they even got out of warranty. They should have painted them lemon yellow.

When you say up front, do you mean in the front of the gear house. like the differendce in these 2 pics:

The first picture is the second version of the up front inlet. The first version did not have the deep grooves leading to the inlet holes. The grooves were added to try to solve the overheating problem. Helped a little bit, but not much.

The second picture is the side inlet. If yours really is a 1982, it should have side inlets.

EDIT: Actually, the second picture is newer than 1982. It has the cavities for the zinc anodes. I'd hate to see what it would look like without the anodes.

Yea mine has side inlets. Il gets some posts later.
But that silver one, wil those work and fit on mine at all.
Bcause if it fits, and its "only" a heat problem? Its not calefornia weather in my country, and the common water temp is between 50-68 F in the water, so it might still keep it cool.

The front inlet and side inlet gearcases are NOT interchangeable. You can't use the front inlet type so it doesn't matter, but it is not a climate issue. It is a water weeds issue. And we have LOTS of weeds here.
