well i just got a new prop in cause the other one was bad and the shop couldnt repair it cause they said it deterieted or something.

well i take it out now its popping out of gear! i dont know what to do. i check the adjustment at shift lever and its ok i cant put it anymore because it will put to much stress on the carriage cause more to break.

dont know what to do get foward gear and clutch and rebuild lower unit. or find a lower unit? what lower units are compatiable?

or should i just sell motor as it?

It looks like a nice clean motor. I would check the price of parts, you probably couldn't find another nice one for the price of repairs. On some of those old motors you could swap the gears and turn the clutch dog around.

On some motors when they pop out of gear you can reverse the clutch dog.
Assuming someone hasn't done so allready

no dont turn the clutch dog around! because its different on each side even though it may loook the same. one of the sides is like 20 thousandths or something smaller and it will cut off oil to one of the gears i believe.

only motor you can switch gears i know is 50hp fat fifty

why not just buy another cluch dog?they can still be had quite easily.i picked one up for a 56 30 johnny from the dealer ,though it was not in stock it came from omc/bombi in a couple of days and was not that pricey.

After over 50 years, there is no way to know what condition either the dog or gear are in without looking. It may have been repaired half a dozen times by now.

You have to get it fixed in time for TD's shindig at Crystal Isle next April.

There should be a pin inside your prop. Maybe you did forget to place it and now you propshaft is running but doesn't spin your prop.

The pin is a protection for breaking your axle or something like that, when you're hitting the ground with your prop. The pin should break then first. It's an easy fix, will cost you about 3 dollar.

Check in at aomci.org there is also a ton of knowledge over there on these
motors and such. pull the lower apart and check it out, ask in the webvertize
section and you may luck into someone having new old stock parts and or
even a complete used lower unit in good condition. very nice bunch to deal
with over there. ask F_R he knows. Also may want to join the club, even try
to find a local chapter and go to a meet, thats what I did, If you take your lower to the meet chances are very good the crew there will pull it down with you and show you the ins and outs of it.

Re: why me! 1958 35hp johnson

there are many years and horsepowers that interchange, the late 50's to mid 60s perhaps even later,33,35 and 40 hp.i agree about the flipping of gears, donr do it cause sooner or later you will be in the gearcase again,i have successfully dresses up the clutch dog and the forward gear many times with a dremel type air tool with various grinds, the clutch dog usually gets most of the wear,so i have dressed the expensive forward gear and replaced the clutch dog alone, you can see the way the meshing areas should look by looking at the otherside of the gear,my explaination is more apparent when looking at the items.purchasing another lowerunit is questionable ,because, you dont know if it has the same common problem, unless you know the owner,or the seller can assure you its ok ,and or the lower came off an engine that has upper problems its a crap shoot, ebay often has people selling old stock,i think its joe reeves on this site that has old stock for sale, what to do at this pointwell,is the motor truly a sweet ,clean show room eng,if so perhaps its worth spending the money for parts,if you are seeking to keep a vintage eng.and its clean, then spend the money,if you just need a 35-40 hp eng, then you should consider a more up to date eng, those dinosauers are gas eating machines that really dont give the performance the later yr engines give,i believe any engine with cd ,no points ,ignition is the way to go,far more power, efficient, and less maint ,i do have some issues with the 48-55 hp 2 cylinder engines of the 80's era because ,i know a few guys that blew the lowerunits and couldnt find replacements ,used, easily, and again, parts are costly, iif your boat can handle a 60-70,the 3 cylinder engines ,with the newer exhust confiurations are the way to gopowerhouses and efficent, parts are redily avail because many engines interchange parts,

Post a wanted ad on the classifieds at www.aomci.org
You're in FL, so check out that site for upcoming swap meets by the two FL chapters. Clutch dogs are not that expensive and if you can replace the coils, you can open the LU, replace the clutch dog and reseal it correctly. Have a diagram/schematic on hand before you start.
