I am rebuilding my 305 5.0 in the boat today. When putting the oil pan on, the book "Rebuilding the small block chevy" says to torque the gasket 9 ft. pounds and 12 in the corners. The gasket is cork. Still haven't got to the specified torque, but the gasket is "pooched out" big time all the way around. I didn't think a cork gasket was supposed to be torqued to the point it stuck out. Should I take it off and start over, or continue until I get it to the 9 lbs.?

when i did my oil pan back in the spring on my 5.0 the gasket was rubber .I put silicone in the corners and snugged all the bolts up then went back over all bolts and just tightened them down just a little bit more and have had no problems and no leaks.

When you tighten the oil pan gasket, use a 1/4 inch ratchet hold it with one hand and just tighten the bolt wrist tight or right to the point that the gasket starts to bulge out.

Re: 5.0 rebuild oil pan gasket

I decided to go ahead and change the gasket before I put the motor in the boat. I thought I would post my solution in case someone could use this info in the future. I purchased a one piece oil pan gasket at Autozone. Yes one piece, even over the bearing and front cover. It's made by Felpro. Just ask for a chevy truck made in the year that your engine is, mine was 1980-1985, and they can hook you up. The gasket is a little pricey at $27.00, but it looks like a much better solution than the alternative. Personally I would rather pay the extra now and feel good that I've done all I can to not have a leak, than deal with even a small leak that I knew I could have fixed right in the beginning. Thanks

What a deal! It cost me $54 for the one piece silicone gasket. Been using that type about 6-7 years.

I did the one piece silicon gasket too. Very easy to install and hasn't leaked all summer. I bought mine on ebay for $24.
