Boat registration numbers...

I know this may seem like a silly question and I'm 90% sure I know the answer is no. I'm only asking since I figure even if I don't get the answer I want, I may still get some creative approaches to what I'd like to do.

My question is, is there a way for a civilian to take down the registration number on a boat, and track down who the owners are? I know the fish commission could find out, but I doubt they release the information. So can a person find out themselves?

Here's why I ask, and where the creative approach comes into play. I figure at least a few of you have been in the same situation. So there's a boat that's been sitting, and I'd love to make the owner an offer on it. But I don't know who the owner is. I know what you're thinking, just go knock on the door of the property it sits on. Not going to work here. The boat is sitting in a large industrial complex that houses several large buildings. I assume one of the employees there has been given permission to store his boat there. So it's not like I can just walk up and beat on the warehouse door. So how do I find out who owns this poor neglected boat that's just been sitting? I'm like the humane society for neglected boats and motorcycles. When I see one being neglected, I just have to take it in and care for it...

My wife is thrilled.... (no honey, you still won't be able to park in the garage this winter. But I got you a really nice new ice scraper.)

I doubt you'll get that information released to you. I'd be more inclined to get a bright piece of paper and laser print a note on it, asking if he's interested in selling it, then laminate it and attache it to the bow of the boat where he or somebody that knows him might see it.

Not a bad idea at all. Except it sits on private indstrial property. I'm not even entirely sure I can walk up to it. It's fenced in. I maybe able to find an open gate, but it seems likely can get pinched for trespassing before I get to it.

Well if it's close to the fence you could post the note on the fence or you could post the note at the entrance to the buildings (the gate)

Is there a security officer around, you could talk to him as well im sure he would know information on the boat.

You could mail/email a letter to the property manager, he would definitely know something about the boat. Getting information about a property would be easier then on the boat.

Good luck

I dont know why knocking on the warehouse door is out of the question....most people who work in a place know everything about everybody around....ask the first person you see if he knows who's boat it is....he may very well know or go get someone for you that knows....cant hurt to ask.

google PENNSYLVANIA FISH & BOAT COMMISSION.
They should be able to to tell you how to identify the last registered owners
